PRACTICE 6

ANALYSIS & OPINION OF A TED TALK

What’s the topic of the TED talk? What’s the main idea? When does the speaker introduce his idea? How?

The topics of this TED talk are education, creativity and intelligence.
The main idea is that being creative is just as important as being academically good.
The speaker introduces this idea at the beginning of his talk by telling a story.

What are the means of support used by the speaker to convince us that his opinion is right? Provide examples.

He uses anecdotes with examples that prove his point of view is right. He tells stories about the bringing up of kids when even though they are wrong, they give their creativity a go.

What’s the speaker’s conclusion? How does he “conclude”?

In the conclusion, he restates his idea by using another anecdote that illustrates his opinion.

I think the speaker is right and I share his point of view. Educating children with an uncertain view of the future must be difficult, but without knowing it we are throwing away so many talents that children have because what is not seen as intelligent or profitable is seen as a mistake. Mistakes have often led to the discovery of one's true passion or actual historic events that have made our lives easier. Not everything that brings success is linked to intelligence or academic abilities. Schools should think about teaching methods that are more diverse and focus on trying instead of achieving on the first try.
